I bought it for just one purpose: I have some old 8mm and Hi8 video tapes (back from the analog era) that I want to transfer to computer files, e.g. avi or mp4 files, but my old Hi8 camcorder died a long time ago. I found that trying to buy an old Hi8 camcorder to do this was a little bit of trouble because all the 8mm/Hi8 camcorders are at this point very old and it's hard to find a good working one. For about the same price as a good working Hi8 camcorder, however, you may be able to find a Digital8 camcorder that can also play the old 8mm and Hi8 video tapes, so that's what I did. The bonus is that the Digital8 camcorder also has a digital out signal that you can connect to your PC to capture the video. If you get an old Hi8 camcorder it's likely to only have analog video out, so you'll have to use a analog video to DV capture card as well as the camcorder: by using a Digital8 camcorder like this one you can eliminate one more external box. For this purpose, this camcorder works very well. Do your research before you buy a Digital8 camcorder to play back old Hi8 tapes, however, because not all Digital8 models have this feature.Read full review

I can't comment on the recording quality yet because I haven't shot any video yet. I bought this old Digital 8 camcorder to digitize my dad's old 8mm tapes via firewire. I've had two issues that are apparently not uncommon with these Sony Camcorders. After plugging and unplugging the firewire cable maybe a dozen times one of the tiny little pins in the 4 pin firewire port on the camcorder got bent and wasn't making contact when in I would plug in the cable. With a magnifying glass, a flashlight, and a thin sewing needle I was able to bend it back enough to make it work again. The other issue was sometimes during playback the picture would start getting messed up. I don't know the technical term for it. It would start looking 'ghosty' with vertical blurring or 'ghostiness' . I found a discussion thread about this exact problem over at cnet. Others have had the same problem with various Sony 8mm camcorders. The solution is to gently tap the camcorder on top or on its side. That actually worked.Read full review

I bought one of these new in 2003 and use it for my Architectural Profession. Having a viewfinder is invaluable for me since shooting outdoors with a screen is so inefficient, however, having a viewfinder that both extends and focuses to your vision is the best and this camera has it. The only shortcoming is no earphone jack to really get the playback info loud and clear. I suspect that I may be able to rig one from one of the lead-out cables in front but never invested the time to experiment. I just bought another one only because my tape carrier mechanism is just about inoperable. Get a nice wide angle screw on lens, make sure you get a remote control , all the patch and power cords, and at least two batteries---one being the genuine Sony brand fat NP-QM71D, and, a good combo house current/car current charger. This camera shoots at digital quality or any other lesser setting and speed. The controls are all based on human hand sizing, not micro-alien phalanges. Ten Thumbs Up all the way!!! If Sony would make these nice substantial cameras with only a high capacity card slot and all the existing features plus earphone jack, I'd get it next.Read full review
It had been a long time since I owned an 8mm camcorder and I can remember the one I owned by Sony was larger than the DCR-TRV460. This is such a nice size and fits quite well in your hand. I bought mine here on eBay from e-zdigital and it was in excellent condition. I'm so glad I waited to find the perfect Sony Camcorder and an eBayer that had the knowledge to answer my questions. I found one that came with a nice case, NP-QM71D Battery, all the paperwork, all the cables (A/V, USB, and i.Link) Handycam Software CD, charger, shoulder strap, remote, lens cover and even a extra tape. This was so much nicer buying every thing all at once and this way I was ready to start taping when I received it. It's easy to transfer video's to your computer or VCR and easy to hook up to your TV. It takes great videos and the color and clarity is pretty good. Not very turned on about the single pictures it takes. I took a few and if I didn't have my digital camera with me I guess I would use it. The pictures were a little too grainy for me. I have not used the Nightshot Plus but I've heard nothing but good comments on it. I like the large 2.5" touch screen. It's so easy to use and so is the menu. I like this little guy so much that I have bought filters, a wide angle and telephoto lens for it. I'm happy with this Sony and would advise anyone who is interest in a good 8mm Camcorder to take a closer look at the Sony DCR-TRV460. Another nice thing to know that there are still some decent 8mm tapes out there at a fair price. Excellent product and well built. I like mine.Read full review
I bought this camcorder because it's the only one I've ever found that has a built in Analog to Digital converter. I was so disappointed when Sony discontinued that feature. Now you have to buy a separate unit if you want to go analog (VHS) to digital (pc). I've got 2 of these cameras specifically for that purpose. And for converting 8mm.
Received the Cam in a timely fashion, and it worked as hoped. I had a Sony Cam I bought in '99 when my oldest was born and used it through 5 kids.. Well the Cam broke years ago and now i want to copy my tapes to my PC. Bought a cam last year, but it didn't play the tapes at the same recording speed, so the video played too fast. This one works just as good if not better than the original cam I had.
Easy to use, touch screen intuitive menu. Perfect to transfer my kids video to digital support.

I bought my first one of these several years ago. Recorded the kids growing up, and it was always a temperamental beast. A few years ago it gave up. The nice thing about the camera was that you could export tapes directly to AVI via IEEE 1394 (and older 8mm tapes too). I bought this one to do just that, import to AVI. With that project done I'll be putting both on eBay for the next person.
Being as old as it is it seems to work as it should.
