Cheap access to basic layer 2 enterprise level gigabit switch features for more complex home users and smaller, less critical businesses -- QoS, VLANs, LACP (combine ports for higher speed), multicast management, port security at MAC or EAP (certificate/RADIUS), etc. Easy case to clean and replace fans. The biggest weaknesses are (1) that its last firmware update was end of 2017 (possibly unpatched switch exploits) and (2) that the clear and reset switches wear and break easily. NOTE: The switch bodies on the motherboard can be removed to allow emergency operation of the exposed flexible metal dome mechanism. But such emergency is a very dangerous open case operation. It risks shorting the dangling motherboard against case or giving the operator a potentially lethal shock from the exposed internal switching power supply (50K-100K voltages). Think super taser with significantly higher current than any police taser and possibly extended duration. Noise is fairly modest for rackmount switch if you have latest firmware (but pretty loud under older versions and for a few seconds after reboot). Regardless many people will not want it directly in sleeping, work, listening (TV/music) rooms or any other quiet or long inhabited space. Nor should the switch be sealed in small closets or cabinet with no air circulation or in rooms exposed to weather extremes - though the unit has pretty good operating humidity (15%-95% noncondensing) and heat tolerance (32F-113F). The command line interface (CLI) closely follows Cisco standards for the complete configuration of all features when connected by Telnet, SSH, or direct console cable. But the switch also supports a web interface for configuration of the most important basic setup items for quick and easy start. This is also a security consideration especially prior to correct configuration of limited IP certificate on switch to allow HTTPS or SSH. The CLI also supports a text menu system serving a similar purpose with slightly more advanced features (esp port aggregation). Read full review

Unit arrived packed in large-bubble bubble wrap, appropriate to the unit. The box was less sturdy than needed and was a bit squashed top, bottom, and all sides. Still, unit appeared okay, so I rolled with it. Fired it up, HP mgt software couldn't find it, couldn't see it on network, decided it had been reset to factory. That means console-only access. No problem, old configs should have been wiped anyway (best practice) and I've got a cable. Hmm, seems HP uses a different pinout and I can't connect. No issue, I'll borrow one. Erps, no one I know has one. Roll with it. I'll put it in place (home lab, not a production environment) and use it as a dumb switch/hub until the cable arrives. Yeah, not so good. Two ports won't light up, even after moving cables from other working-on-new-switch connections to those ports. Then find other ports that do "light up" can't talk to other ports on the switch. So, appears there is still *some* kind of config in place that is segregating ports, in addition to the two dead or turned-off ports. So still waiting for my HP console cable to arrive so that I can find out if I have a config turning off or blocking ports or if I have a defective unit. My fault for not investigating the cable issue when I bought (needing a cable would not have changed my purchase decision, just needed to buy that at the same time), but less thrilled with what appears to be an old config left in place OR a defective unit. Once the cable arrives (overdue), I'll investigate further and update this if possible.Read full review

Great product. Came faster than listed. Works as advertised. However, if i could post the only complaint I have with this device would be that it is quite a bit louder that my other switch. I think it's how the fans are situated. Also, I was not able to access the web ui to properly setup the switch.

It's stable but very old and to use the web gui you have to use way old dated Firefox and Java. A real pain to set up and use.

Port 1 is unresponsive but all the others work well. It’s dinged up but at this price the performance is fantastic. A little fan noise but that is normal.
