Good, if slightly flawed Android device.
As with most things it depends what you want it to do and what you pay for it... I paid £80 for mine (nearly new) a couple of months ago and I'm pretty happy with it. I wanted a device that would play music through my home and car stereos via Bluetooth and allow me to surf the Web. The Archos does both. Sound quality through Bluetooth is okay, but lacks midrange and any real presence, sadly it's nowhere near as good as a direct connection. I believe that's a limitation of the current Bluetooth protocol, rather than anything to do with the Archos, but it's a little disappointing nevertheless. No complaints about its web browsing capability, other than the obviously fairly small screen.
In general, the unit is small and light. I didn't want a proper tablet as I already have a netbook, I wanted something smaller and this fits the bill perfectly. WiFi and Bluetooth connections are fairly stable, battery life is good, the built in speaker does its job and once I'd upgraded the device to include the full Android market, its functionality is superb. I hadn't expected to use it as a games machine, but I have downloaded Angry Birds and a few others and find myself playing them more often than I should...
Downsides, a little laggy in launching applications, which considering it has a 1 ghz cpu is a bit of a surprise and the screen, whilst the resolution, contrast, brightness and viewing angles are fine, the touch interface is pretty poor. Its resistive and single touch only and with my big fingers almost unusable. Things improve dramatically using a stylus, which in my house can be found down the back of chairs, under the settee, etc - so not a problem.
Would I buy one again? Well in this size and price range there isn't much competition. I don't need a phone and I don't want an iTouch. The screen is flawed, but would I pay £200 more for an android device with a better capacitive 4.3 inch screen? - in a word no. When I can get something better for sub £150, I'll change it, until then I'll put up with it.Read full review
