This is one of the most marvellous books I have ever read! Having been to Kenya 1 year ago I found it an incredible reminder of my wonderful time there. Having visited the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage & signing up to foster a baby orphaned elephant at that time, I found the book to be of special significance. Daphne Sheldrick is an excellent writer & her account of her life with her husband David is incredibly heartwarming. For African wildlife lovers the book is a beautiful account of African elephants & all the other special animals she writes about. She and her husband have done a great deal to try to preserve the special animals at the conservancy.

This book is told from true life events ,it has great emotional trauma, humourless moments interspersed with the factual and horrific reality of human greed for ivory and horn products. The love Daphe has for Africa is infectious and her love for David and their cause is remarkable. I have now been three times to Africa and each time I see different parts which this book highlights expertly. Unlike many memoirs, this one uses the first person singular but the narrative is less about the writer herself than about her surroundings and the animals that she encounters and cares for. If you love animals and Africa, you will love this book. Daphne Sheldrick is a good writer and an extraordinary person.
