The four artist Jeffrey Jones, Michael Kaluta, Barry Windsor Smith and Berni Wrightson knew of each others work; they often met at Comic Conventions where they were honored speakers or guest. They got tired of the strictures of editors, deadlines. etc. They rented a studio that has become the fabulous cluttered museum for the mystically deranged( but productive) artist that it is?
Published in 1979 and long out of print, The Studio is a collection of portfolios by 4 of my favorite comic book pencillers and illustrators from the 1970's. I was previously familiar with the work of Berni Wrightson from Swamp Thing, Mike Kalita from The Shadow (both D.C. titles), Barry Smith from Marvel's Conan The Barbarian and Jeffrey Jones' Idyll strip from Funnies section in the back of National Lampoon circa 1972-73. This tome elegantly showcases more mature work (in execution as well as in content) from a few years later in the decade of which, until about 6 months ago, I had no prior knowledge. Upon learning of this book's existence, I tracked down this copy from this seller and am very well pleased with content, conduction, shipment and buying experience.
