  • This stuff /can/ help...

The datum of ultimate usefulness - I AM NOT A DOCTOR (I do have a useful medical background, but as a trauma medic and an amateur apothecary.) Therefore, SEEK COMPETENT MEDICAL ADVICE BEFORE BEGINNING ANY SUPPLEMENT PROGRAMME! This is particularly relevant with supplements like iron (reasons given below.) First, it should be noted that the symptoms of iron-deficient anemia can be present, /even/ /if/ /you/ /have/ /sufficient/ /iron/ in your body! Therefore, I would suggest you get your labs done (CBC +Chem12) before deciding on either iron or ferritin. Also, note that an iron supplement programme should NOT be followed without competent recommendation or monitoring! The body tends to preserve as much iron as possible (haemoglobin in blood gets stripped down and the iron reused, and iron plays an important part in metabolic function and regulation. Therefore, your body will hang onto it.) Overuse of an iron supplement can result in hemochromotisis, which requires bleeding at intervals (typically,) until the regulatory mechanism can be corrected. Ferritin, however, is the transport mechanism (an organometallic protein) for iron in the body. Ferritin also binds to iron to store it until needed, and keep excess iron from interfering with metabolic function. The amount of ferritin in the body may be seen on the Chem12 panel as "Ferritin" and "Transferrin Saturation" values (while red blood cells/age/haemoglobin content will show up as part of the CBC.) This is where my wife comes in: she was showing symptoms of iron-deficiency anaemia. However, her CBC showed sufficient red blood cells and RBC haemoglobin content - if the blood was a bit "young" (cells dying early - RBCs typically last ~120 days...) Chem12 showed sufficient iron levels - but showed low ferritin and transferrin saturation. After a bit of research on my part, I found out the function of ferritin in the body (and why it should be monitored,) and why the few values I didn't understand (relating to ferritin, mainly) were monitored regularly and why they were important. So, I dug around for ferritin supplements. This is the only ferritin supplement I was able to find (although ferritin can also be found in red meats,) and I source it from wherever I can. I got a bottle of this, and started my wife taking this BID for two weeks, and she has been taking it QD since. Over the last year or so (when I started this,) I have noted a major improvement in energy levels and cognitive function (she would snooze about half of the day, and tended to forget things or lose her train of thought beforehand,) and it is readily apparent within 36 hours when I run out and haven't had a chance to source new stock. (Note that she'd tried to run an iron supplement as well, because she was throwing iron. However, doesn't matter how much iron you have if you don't have the means to deal with it. Ferritin is how iron is handled by the body.) *I* would not suggest taking it more than twice a day - I thought that was excessive myself, but she was heavily deficient in ferritin when I started. I therefore ran a "shock dose" for the first two weeks, then settled down to once daily (in the morning.) (As I said, I'm no doctor. Just a trauma medic who has spent FAR too much time talking to doctors in the last 15 years, as a caretaker. I've learned a great deal, but I always made it a point to have both myself and the doctor learn something new by the time the appointment is over - something medical for me, anything at all for them. That means there was a definite /exchange/ taking place - it does no-one any good at all to just sit there and listen. Especially in the last couple of years, it has become necessary for the individual patient to advocate for his own benefit. /Talk/ /with/ your doctor - don't talk /to/ your doctor, or let your doctor talk /to/ you. The difference is not semantic... And, if you find you don't need this (or other specific supplements you've considered,) there's no reason to take them. Some mineral supplements and the like can lead to trouble in the body if their levels get too high! The place to start, if you suspect a deficiency, is with a CBC +Chem12, as I mentioned earlier. At least get yourself pointed in the right direction (many vitamins and such may be tested for the same way - either by direct measurement or metabolic products, such as methylmalonic acid to check, I believe, B12.)
