Arthur C. Clarke’s most celebrated work; it was commissi...oned by Stanley Kubrick, who wanted the already well-established science-fiction writer, Clarke, to write an original story for Kubrick’s foray into the genre. 2001: A Space Odyssey was thus written by Clarke to become what would be a film panned by the critics at the time. The quality of the story, however, endured and is unquestionably regarded as one of the most important literary contributions of the 20th century. The film, incidentally, enjoys a similar status, which is in no small part down to the quality and depth of the purpose-written storyline by Clarke. It has that rare combination of being at once captivating from a superficial plot-line point of view, and touching on matters of sublime philosophical importance. But more than that, it captures your imagination in a way that leaves you staring into space. My god, it’s full of stars!
