A most comprehensive overview of origin, development, and evolution of the B-47 and B-52
Much has been written in the past about the B-47 Stratojet, the first American swept-wing jet bomber and the legendary B-52 Stratofortress, but this book is the most comprehensive overview of the design, development gestation, and evolution of the Stratojet and Stratofortress. Salient emphasis is placed on early design studies for these two aircraft, aircraft designs that competed with the B-47 and B-52, unbuilt derivatives of the B-47 and B-52 (e.g., supersonic bomber variants, airliner designs, nuclear-powered proposals, and the Model 820 military airlifter), and studies to fit the B-52 with new engines. Several iterations of the B-52 in its role as a carrier aircraft are also described, including its role as a launch platform for the AGM-28, AGM-86, and AGM-129 cruise missiles, GAM-87 air-launched ballistic missile, and X-15, X-43, and X-51 hypersonic experimental aircraft. I want to commend Scott Lowther for mustering the stamina to write a detailed book about the design, development, and evolution of the B-47 and B-52, one thing that caught me off guard while reading a chapter of this book about early design studies for the B-52 were drawings of Boeing intercontinental bomber projects from World War II, some of which were submitted to the same military requirement as the XB-35 and B-36 Peacemaker.
