Harari tells it like it is.
An in depth discussion of how the world we live in now got to be this way. I recommend this book because it will make you think. Few tombs do that anymore. I have been mystified for most of my life wondering why people believe in gods and religions. Myths, I used to think, were harmful and so patently untrue that only a fool would believe such falsehoods. Now I am humbled to realize that I believe in some myths myself. "An Op-ed more than anything"
I was expecting a more scientific look at the evolution and expansion of man. But this was from a social studies standpoint. (That's my own fault for not reading enough sample pages) I thought the writing style was strange at times. At some points it was taking way too much time breaking down well known and easily understood topics, seemingly for the extra sentences to make the book longer. And at many times pandering to the liberal crowd. example: "Recent studies of the hormonal and cognitive systems of man and women strengthen the assumption that men indeed have more aggressive and violent tendencies, and are therefore, on average, better suited to serve as common soldiers. Yet granted that the common soldiers are all men, does it follow that the ones managing the war and enjoying it fruits must also be men? That makes no sense. It's like assuming that because all the slaves cultivating cotton fields are black, plantation owners will be black as well. Just as an all-black workforce might be controlled by an all-white management, why couldn't an all male soldiery be controlled by an all-female or at least partly female government?" Should be Required Reading!
Sapiens is one of the best written and concisely accurate books I have ever written. The author pulls no punches and backs up his facts with well researched and reliable references. There have been some negative reviews of this book and I can see why once I've read it. If you approach this book with a prejudiced view of mankind's development based on religious or non-scientific held assumptions, then the facts as presented will most definitely dent your preconceptions. The author has no other agenda other than simply presenting the facts of mankind's growth and development. He is neither for or against any set of beliefs or political philosophies, but he is not afraid to let the facts as discovered and presented speak for themselves. I am almost 65 years old and have been an avid reader all of my life. I have never come across a book that is as honestly straightforward with it presentation and description of its subject material. Be warned that this book is not for the timid or easily offended, but if you want to learn more about how we all have developed as species and society, then it is well worth your time. The rewards gained will far exceed the efforts you put in to digest this data.
