About this product

Product Information

Perhaps no-one took more photographs in the East End of London in the sixties than John Claridge? People say life was hard in the East End but I found the living was easy and I loved it. Collecting together more than two hundred of John Claridge's stylish and evocative images, this is a candid insider's portrait of an entire society observed by a unique photographic talent. My East End's gone, it doesn't exist anymore and these are pictures I could never do again, but seeing them now is like looking at an old friend. Accompanied by an extended interview with John Claridge by The Gentle Author

  • A great photograph book on the East End

Fantastic book. Black and white photos took in the 1960s of the East End (and a bit beyond depending where you draw the boundary). The photos look much older given the surrounds which have been documented here (crumbling Victorian streetscapes). Highly recommend the book! Have this on my coffee table along with some of the Hoxton Press photo books.

  • Brilliant!

John Claridge is like the Turner of photography, atmosphere drips from every image. an exceptional piece of work. If you like urban photography, it doesn't get much better than this.
