I purchased this Deore 9-speed long cage derailleur to expand the gearing on my Litespeed 10-speed road bike from 11-28 to 11-34. The 9-speed mountain derailleurs have the same 1-to-1 pull ratio as the 10-speed road shifters and so the swap was easy and the shifts are flawless. I have one of these derailleurs on my 10-speed Lynskey Cooper as well and it works perfectly. A great and affordable way to increase one's gear range on a modern road bike.

I installed this on a 30 year old Trek road bike. I live in a very hilly area and needed a 34 teeth cassette to attempt some of the monster climbs I live near. I would have gotten a road deraileur like the Shimano 105 but it is only spected at 32 teeth. Would it have been ok, probably but why risk it. My whole drivetrain is mountain bike components on a road bike frame and it was built to climb. I love the smooth precise shifting of this deraileur. I ride using friction shifters so not only did I need a deraileur that could handle a large cassette I needed one that would be responsive without be jumpy or slipping down a gear while going full throttle out of the saddle. I know that there are much better deraileurs out there but I am not sure there is a better one in this price point. Be careful though if you run 10 or 11 speeds, a different pull ratio is used and everything is a little off gear wise (unless you run everything on Shimano's Dynasys system). The 10 speed version of this has a sweet clutch to help with chainslap but does not have the convenient rear barrell adjuster that the 9 speed has.Read full review

If you have 10 speed road levers on a cyclocross bike this is the derailleur to use. Later models do not shift properly on road levers - not even close. This derailleur allows you to put ultra-gears on a cross bike that's used off-road in a REAL way - hills and drops. Gravel or dirt trails. These bikes don't have the weight problems of full suspension bikes though they're a great deal slower downhill. Watch out belowwww.
