Additional InformationIn keeping with Hollywood's time-honoured tradition of turning celebrated novels into cinematic spectacles, director John Madden brings Louis de Berniere's acclaimed 1994 work, CORELLI'S MANDOLIN, to life. Set on the Greek island of Cephalonia in 1940, the film tells the story of the beautiful Pelagia (Penelope Cruz), who lives with her father, Dr. Iannis (John Hurt) and is engaged to local fisherman, Mandras (Christian Bale). When Mandras leaves the island to fight for his country, Pelagia is left behind to worry and wait for a letter, which never arrives. In the meantime, the Italian army occupies Cephalonia, and Pelagia and Dr. Iannis receive a new visitor into their home. Captain Antonio Corelli (Nicolas Cage), a romantic opera lover with a passion for playing the mandolin, annoys Pelagia with his free-spirited personality, but it is this exact charm that eventually wins her heart. Soon, the two are head-over-heels in love. Mandras's return adds friction to the situation, but when the Germans sweep in and begin to senselessly murder the town's locals, Captain Corelli and Mandras must place their differences aside in order to preserve the island. Exquisitely photographed by cinematographer John Toll, Madden's film boasts impassioned performances by Hurt and legendary actress, Irene Papas.
ReviewsUSA Today - ...[The] photography of island ocean vistas and town squares is so fare the year's most gorgeous..., New York Times - ...The movie shimmers with a bluish-gold luminescence reflected from the turquoise waters of the Ionian sea....A glorious ode to the sun-baked island on which it was filmed..., Box Office - ...[Madden] and his cast deliver the storytelling goods in many fine isolated moments...

    Brilliant film

Bought this dvd because we had booked a holiday in Kefalonia and thought the film might get us in the mood. It is basically a love story set on Kefalonia during the second World War when the island was occupied by Italian and German forces. An excellent cast and lovely story with beautiful scenery.

    DISAPPOINTING

Perhaps I should not have read the book first, as film adaptations are always a disappointment, but although I understand the limitations of film, some changes here are unforgiveable. I understand the need to change the ending, the ending in the book just wouldn't work in a film, but it seems bizarre to turn the partisans into heroes when in the book they are thugs and butchers, almost as bad as the Nazis, who are also cowards who stay away from the Nazis, The treatment of the character of Mandras is particularly galling. In the book he serves to illustrate how an innocent man can have his mind corrupted and be turned into a murderer and rapist, but in the film he is a pinnacle of virtue who tries to win back Pelagia's love by saving Corelli. In the book he becomes a monster who thinks he has the right to take whatever he wants and Pelagia has to shoot him to avoid being raped. Although this film is shocking in parts for me it has the feeling of having been sanitised. I quite like Nicolas Cage, but I don't feel that he was right for this role. Of course John Hurt was superb as always and perfect for the role, as was Penelope Cruz, but the real star was Cephalonia (but, the scenery in the book is better). I would recommend any one to read the book. It's a bit long, but it's very well written and I found it a very easy read.

  • Disappointing. A missed opportunity

Having just come back from Kefalonia (where the film was made) we had high hopes for at least some beautiful scenery. But the film fails on virtually every level. Nick Cage makes every effort to bring some life to the proceedings, but his co-star Penelope Cruz is lacklustre in every way and their romance never remotely convinces. Scenes jump from one to the other and it often feels like important information/motivation is missing to make sense of them. The story doesn't know what it wants to be and is just a jumble of half-formed plots. Disappointing.

  • Good story and well made.

Romantic drama set in Greece in WW2. The actors have done a fine job of bringing the book to life and we enjoyed the beautiful location shots as well.

  • Lovely movie

A very moving story with highs and lows. The book is good too and sufficiently different to the film to warrant a read without spoiling either.

Going to Kephalonia later this year so wanted to get a feel for the country and the scenery. Not disappointed in either the place or the film and can't wait to go.
