Far out (mostly) free form jazz. Fans of Jack's other mostly blues-rock / progressive rock work will probably not like this. More likely to appeal to fans of Jack's work with Tony Williams Life Time and John McLaughlin's more free form work. I'd rather go for John McLaughlin's 'Extrapolation' recorded around the same time.
I'm a big fan of DHS. I really enjoy Colosseum and I saw him playing live with Jack Bruce in the late eighties. With Colosseum drummer, Jon Hiseman and the guitar talents of John McLauglin I was expecting some great music. I'm a jazz fan and like a lot of different kinds of jazz, but this is the sort of 70s weird disjointed, angular stuff that turned a lot of people off jazz. I suppose if you like Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, (which also featured McLaughlin) then you might like this too. It's a departure from the blues/ rock influences that were apparent in Colosseum and has more to do with Free Jazz and that sort of music where you go ' dibby .... blip....... wibbly wob - buuuh'. For me, with the potential of the line-up, this was a big disappointment and one best avoided unless you're into the weirder side of things.Read full review
Beware, a real jazz album, but what a brilliant one! Recorded in august 1968 while on holiday from Cream Jack Bruce recorded this jazz album, just to get it out of the system, he said. Jack was 25 years old at the time and if you ever wondered about his level of musicianship you might get all your answers right here. Joined by Jon Hiseman, Dick Heckstall Smith & John McLaughlin, Jack makes a beautiful version of Born To Be Blue among other originals. Not the ordinary JB album and for sure no hits here but give it a few listenings and you will be highly rewarded.
