After seeing several Nicolas Cage films recently that really were not up to his high standard (they were super-wierd!) I was pleasantly surprised by this hard hitting film. Set in the dark heart of the underground porn industry with a gimp and porn movie maker as the bad guys it could have easily slipped into 'unbelievable' territory but instead it takes you along on quite a thrilling ride. Cage is fantastic as he investigates the snuff film found by a rich old lady leading him away from his family and disturbing him in the process. There were some true gory parts but it is Cage who keeps you watching. If you enjoy a thriller then this is the film for you, this is one I will be keeping in my DVD collection rather than selling on again on Ebay!!!!
This is an excellent detective triller, which centres around the dark world of snuff movies. Cage is asked to investigate an 8MM reel of film found by a widow in her late husbands safe, which shows a girl being murdered. Unsure of whether it is real or not Nick Cage's character become involved in this dark circle of snuff moves to fild out the truth. Excellent film, if you like this try a film with Robert DeNiro called 15 minutes.
Admittedly, I haven't seen a lot, if any, of the movies or read the books other people have said have covered this territory already, but I found myself caught up in the story and not bored or thinking, "Ho-hum." I haven't liked Joel Schumacher lately(his two BATMAN movies were a joke, and A TIME TO KILL was exploitation at its worst), but this one was pretty good. Admittedly, like in A TIME TO KILL, this sometimes comes close to an exploitation movie(particularly through the performances of James Gandolfini and Peter Stormare), but that's only part of the time. Most of the time you feel sadness and outrage, and like in Schumacher's very good FALLING DOWN, you aren't asked to condone Cage's actions near the end, you're just asked to understand them. This might not be the type of part Cage is known for, but I found him compelling in the role(and if something upsets the man who ate a cockroach on film, you KNOW it's heavy-duty stuff). I do admit the film would have been a little unrelenting without the presence of Joaquin Phoenix, though; he was like a breath of fresh air, and I liked how matter-of-fact he was. I can't say I enjoyed this movie, but I'm not sorry I saw it.Read full review
8MM was a very dark and powerful film featuring the seedy underground world of pornography and snuff movies. It was, to be frank, fantastic. Nic Cage, rapidly becoming one of my favourite actors, walks through with a disgusted air and even Joaquin Phoenix, who I've never been that impressed with, hit the nail as a porn shop manager Deeply disturbing, yes. Highly compelling, yes. A good buy... you bet!
It was a good film about decisions and feelings. I bought it because my girlfriend wanted me to see it as she thought it demonstrated the evil of porn in the wrong hands, I could see her point but don't entirely agree with her.
i think this fil is good but not the best film i have ever seen its a dark film based on snuff movies and porn things of that nature but if that dont bother you, have a watch.
a very entertaining film, if you like who done it films, good acting and good plot with plenty of misleading bits well worth getting for a evening in, you won"t be disapointed.
