Comic chase movie from 1990, as Gibson & Hawn are pursued across the northern US states by corrupt drug-enforcement agents. Hawn unwittingly provides clues using the phone & her beloved gold credit card, whilst the DEA have all of Gibsons prior contacts --- hence, the title, I guess. There are a number of set-piece stunts, though not quite a big as in the Lethal Weapon series, and there is an interesting finale in a zoo with several big cats. One of the themes of the film is the butt-shot, and we see several of each lead in various stages of undress. Gibson displays the charm and athleticism which made him a huge star as Mad Max & Riggs, in Lethal Weapon. Rick, his character here, has the same sense of humour as Riggs, but is a bit calmer, more overtly anti-establishment, and prefers being evasive to returning fire. Hawn also looks very limber in a number of action scenes, demonstrating that women over 40 could be cast to advantage in such glamour roles, a decade before Sandra Bullock, (though one could also cite Angie Dickinson, Joan Collins, and any number of B&W stars from 1930-1955). Her acting is also very good, and there is a degree of chemistry between the two leads. However, her character is quite selfish, and only her looks, grit, and long-standing attachment to Gibson make her at all likeable. The baddies don't quite stack up. Bill Duke provides excellent under-stated threat. However, after a wonderful entrance, David Carradine is disappointing. We really only see him holding a gun, rather than using his acting talent to contribute genuine menace to the pursuit. Instead, there's a lot of weedy Stephen Tobolowsky on the phone and FBI computer. For me, the film is a bit episodic, ticking off the set-piece stunts. Hawn's relationship with Gibson fails to provide the same degree of glue and coherence to the movie as Gibson's magic partnership with Danny Glover in the Lethal Weapon series. Thus, for me, all the elements are here, but it doesn't quite hang together. However, the film was a box-office success, so.... 6/10 Read full review
