Top quality martial arts action, confusing presentation.
Rather than write a review I feel I should explain what you are getting with this box set as the descriptions never seem to tell you exactly what is contained within these discs.
The box sets themselves are similarly vague on the details hence it's important to understand what you are spending your money on.
Mortal Kombat Conquest was a TV series that lasted 1 season before being cancelled.
The first 4 episodes were released on the DVD, Mortal Kombat Conquest: Special Collectors edition.
5 DVD's were released subsequently to this but they are NOT the next 5 episodes.
Rather they are compilations of episodes throughout the series presented as standalone movies.
Some releases may even contain different episodes, what I am about to describe is what I saw on my personal copy.
I have only read the synopsis of each episode from Wikipedia and it's from that I am estimating which episodes are contained on each disc.
The back cover suggests watching the discs in the following order: Kreeya, Quan Chi, Queen, Black Dragon and Final Battle.
Disc 1 - Kreeya
This disc appears to contain the episodes Kreeya and Balance of Power, episodes 16 and 20. This "film" is edited well as it's actually difficult to tell where one episode finishes and the other begins. The story arcs are related hence the episodes blend well together.
Disc 2 - Quan Chi
This disc combines the episodes Quan Chi and Festival of Death, episodes 9 and 14.
Unlike the previous disc, this feature is very poorly edited. The transition between episodes is not subtle and the story arcs are not related, the episodes were likely chosen at random.
Disc 3 - Queen
My personal favorite, this disc combines the episodes Noob Saibot and In Kold Blood, episodes 6 and 18. Despite the massive gap between episodes, this feature works well because the events of episode 6 are mentioned at the beginning of episode 18, hence the transition works better than the previous disc. The editing is also far more professional on this disc.
Disc 4 - Black Dragon
Episodes 7 and 11, Debt of the Dragon and Thicker Than Blood. While the editing is not as sloppy as Quan Chi, this is another pair of unrelated episodes and you can tell where one episode ends and the next begins.
Disc 5 - Final Battle
Probably the best disc in terms of continuity as it is the last 2 episodes of the series while ironically also being the worst - it finishes with a massive cliff hanger which will never be resolved as the series was cancelled.
This in a way sums up a big flaw with the series (which ironically is the reason the disc Queen flows so well).
The show had a bad habit of introducing cliff hangers which would never go onto be resolved, episode 3 for example ends with a dramatic ending you would expect to see continued in the next episode, yet episode 4 is the start of a completely new (and very boring IMO) story arc which also happens to be the last episode on the first DVD release.
Episode 18, after a massive gap suddenly mentions a character that was seen killed in episode 6 suggesting he might return - and obviously never does due to the series cancellation.
The tendency to introduce story arcs and leave massive gaps before they are revisited is likely the reason they were able to blend seemingly unrelated episodes together and result in a semi-coherent product.
Hence if you are thinking of buying this disc because you want to see answered some of the questions left by the first DVD release you will be left disappointed whatever you buy.
If you are looking for any kind of closure after watching the first DVD release you will likely be disappointed as this box set only really gives you snippets of the full series.
If however like me you enjoyed the first 4 episodes primarily for the fight sequences and are a die hard Mortal Kombat fan this box set will be of some value to you as the fights are truly magnificent.
The characters from the game you will see in this box set are as follows: Kung Lao, Shang Tsung, Rayden, Shao Kahn, Reptile, Quan Chi, Scorpion, Noob Saibot, Shadow Priests (if you want to count background characters).
5 stars for the fight sequences, 1 star for everything else.
Aggregate rating 3 stars.
