This is an early Daryl Hannah film and well worth a look. It does, more or less follows the book. As far as the film goes it's a rare treat. If you have read the books I would suggest you try the film. Well worth looking at. As a fan of the Jean M Auels works, I have read and enjoyed all 6 of her books a number of times and still enjoy reading them. Just as I enjoyed the film.

Clan of the Cave Bear is an adaptation of Jean M. Auel's first book in her "Earth Children" series, and sadly the only one ever filmed, this film stars Daryl Hannah and how a young child survives an earthquake only to be alone, she is found by a clan of Neanderthals who take her with them and bring her up as one of them.....if nothing else you might enjoy it so much you will want to read the books.
I found the dvd to be very dark visually, much of the action happens inside dark caves so it would be dark. The Neanderthal people were not quite as neanderthal as I would have liked, they looked too much like Ayla, but on the whole it was very enjoyable. I loved the book and all the series so when I found out that a dvd had been made of the first one I had to have it. I don't regret buying it and shall probably watch it again, and again....
If you have read the book this will not disapoint. Easy to follow the story with naration as part of the overall ambience. Filmed in spectular setting. Characters believeable. Would have liked a glimse of what is to come in the Valley fo the Horses at the end when Ayla walks into the distance.
I am a massive fan of the Earth Children books and it was good to see Ayla come to life on the screen, what a shame the sequals weren't made too. :)
Fabulous Film Very much depicting the Book.I really enjoyed this film, The author has put lots of research into the background of the Neanderthals.
This film is not exactly as the book, but it has elements of beauty and it does bring some parts of the book to life. Daryl Hannah is excellent as Ayla, beautiful and graceful, exactly how I imagined Ayla would be. I do wish someone like Peter Jackson would take this series under his wing and create something epic as I think these books need to be handled with a lot of TLC. Without Daryl Hannah though, I do think this movie would have fallen on its face. You do need to know the background of the book though to be able to follow the story and it is a pity they do not focus more on the fact that Ayla is actually a medicine woman, they accept the person who watches this movie knows it already.
have read all the books and am a huge fan, this is a good version of the book and its a shame they never made any of the others. Lets hope they remake this one and more.
Bought for my daughter who has read the series. She says the film is good and she really enjoyed it. Wish the rest of the series was available in film.
Read the book, wish i`d seen the film first. Can`t say it came up to GOOD or EXCELLENT standard with the book.
