I first bought an Iriver iHP-120 about 9 years ago and found the sound quality and ease of use to be second to none. Over the years since I have tried all generations of ipod's, zen's, H340, archos's, etc etc. I have still not found another MP3 which feels so right as the Iriver H1x0 series. The best thing for me is the digital optical output. I use this for connection to my reciever and my car stereo and the sound quality is awesome. Yes; ipod touch can have almost any app from the app store, but if all you want to do is play compressed digital audio then this is what you need. I am a fan of rockbox firmware because there are many more features, such as cross-fade/cuesheet, game boy ROM support, more adjustable equaliser and ability to save EQ settings and many different display skins are included. I also put a 128GB SSD in my one for my growing music collection. The battery now lasts about 40 hours!Read full review
I've had a few MP3 players, including dome pretty modern solid-state memory ones, but this is by far the best. As soon as I got it, I put Rockbox on it because I needed a Composer index (which is not in the original iRiver operating system). It will play most of the formats, including OGG, which is a big plus. The sound quality is superb, but you'll need a very good set of earbuds to appreciate it. I use Sennheiser CX400s. The battery life is exceptional and the navigating joystick is very easy to use. You can use it as a USB hard drive and can transfer the MP3/OGG files across using Windows Explorer; you don't need any of the proprietary programs like iTunes to do it. The database takes care of all the organising of the files. With Rockbox, you can set the screen display to any style you want. OK, it's not a colour display, but it doesn't concern me - all I want is the information on what I'm listening to, not pretty pictures. I haven't yet used it for recording, so I can't comment on that. It's beautifully made and very solid. Some people may not like the bulk, but it suits me well. I've replaced the battery, but you need to take it a part to do it. There's plenty of advice and videos on YouTube to show you how to do it. All in all, a classic player. They're relatively expensive on EBay (relative to the colour H320) but I'd prefer this one any day.Read full review
I bought more than one of devices due to as I fix them & then sell them again as they are one of the best MP3 player / recorder I have ever heard! The main reason I like this device is because of the functions & the sound quailty it produces. I have tried many makes of MP3 players & none seem to come as close to the sound quality that this device produces. I also like that this device has a line in recording function & use it all the time as I'm a DJ, so I just plug this device into my mixer & hit the record & the way it goes! The other thing is excellent about these deivce is that battery life, I can leave the device on from 7am in the morning & run it all day till 5:30pm & still have battery life left in the deivce & that's with the back light on all the time on the device! I also like the LCD remote you can get for this device, as you can control the whole device from the remote plus it has a LCD display which shows you everything that the main screen on device shows. Also you don't need to use any program with this device, you just use the drag & drop way to add & remove files from this device & it's quick to transfer files to & from this device. I would highly recommend if you get one of these devices to try Rockbox out as it gives you more functions & more of everything really that the iRiver firmware doesn't! plus it's more user friendly to use than the iRiver firmware. I have read some bad reviews about this device but these do have two problems, one being the battery needs to be replaced, but that like that with anything which runs on a battery, after time you will need to replace it. The second thing is because these devices use a HDD instead of flash they are not designed to be dropped & you can not go jogging with this device. As long as you are careful with this device you will get years after years of use before something goes wrong! This device is very well made & built to last! I have owned one from new for 4 years & never had a problem with it & still it's running fine. You can also do great mods to these devices, you can now turn your device from HDD memory to flash by buying a 1.8" IDE to CF adapter & buy a CF card & then you can use the device on flash or go for SSD memory, but this sort of memory costs a lot! All I can say is! if you are into good sound quality & excellent battery then this device is for you.Read full review
