This filter is an optional item. It is my personal decision to use this filter on each of my Canon lenses in order to: 1. Protect the glass on my expensive lenses from dirt and contact scratches, 2. Block UV rays in order to get more pleasing photos. Remember, it is a filter! As such it is optional! Like any other filter, if you don't know what it does, you can get by without it -- or, you can educate yourself and then decide if you wish to purchase this item or not.

I've been into photography (still and moving) from the late 70 until now. I've used lots of equipment, and I have always put a UV filter on the front of all my lenses. I still do film, and of course digital format, and it is just as important now as it ever was. Get yourself enough UV filters to put on each of your lenses. Don't skip a few bucks and buy a single one and move it from lens to lens. You might be thinking of that your lenses have the same filter size and so you can just buy one filter and move it from lens to lens as you use them, or even get a step ring so you only have to buy a single filter. Trust me--don't do that. The one time you say to yourself "ah, I'm just going to take a couple of pictures, and don't need to swap the filter" is the time you wish you had. These are inexpensive measures of front-line protection. The Tiffen filter is a well known brand. They have been around the entire time I've been into photography. (a quick google search shows they have been in business since 1945. And that they are made in New York USA) I highly recommend you get one of these for each of your lenses. I have not been compensated in anyway from the manufacturer or the seller of this product. This review is of my own free will and reflects my feelings and beliefs of the products mentioned. I have only used this a few times, so it is hard to know how much difference it really makes in output. That is not a slam on the product, just a reflection on the purpose of the filter. I took a photography class that strongly encouraged me to buy a UV filter, and Tiffen was a recommended brand.

Excellent brand! great quality of material used, i like the feel of the lense frame (alloy) compare to other brands which is plastic. The lense can be easily cleaned and it wont scratch that easily. Great product! Recommend for both who are starting photography and professionals as well, cheap product that can protect expensive lenses both from UV and scratches.
I always put a UV filter on all of my lenses. My #1 reason is to protect the glass on my camera lens. Better to scratch/chip a filter than a new lens. Tiffen is high quality glass and what I always buy.

I have always been very protective about my lenses, after all they are just as expensive or even more than your camera. The Tiffen UV is my standard filter for all of my lenses, because of it's affordability, being lightweight and its clarity. needless to say that a filter is cheaper than most lenses.

Works great on my 58mm-filter-type Panasonic Lens(es). Nice construction...durable. Lens dust-cap fits this nicely and is secure. A bit foggy but cleaned up nicely with distilled water.
