Just finished reading it and Michael Asher paints a...n altogether very different story from the original book of derring do! This guy (Micheal) served with the paras and the sas, so he kinda knows how things normally get carried out during special operations and is a suitable fellow to offer his opinion, having got the teeshirt, so to speak. It's not that he deliberately set out to pour scorn on what the original patrol did or did not do and he does say, that faced with the conditions they had to endure, what they did achieve was by no means nothing short of miraculous. He went back to Syria, to the original site and through information gathering, by himself on foot and spending time with the local Bedouin people, he demonstrates and puts to bed certain mistruths, not least bringing peace to the family of Vince Philips. I wont say any more, other than, if military history is of interest to you, I would recommend this book. If you have read the original Bravo Two Zero book, this will get you thinking! Enjoy!
