You cannot argue with an album that contains "Cry of the Black Birds", "Valhall Awaits Me" and "Runes to My Memory". A fine distillation of their melodic death metal (before that became a buzzword for every band lately).

I'm really getting into Amon Amarth. They're playing at this year(2009)'s Bloodstock. When I first saw them I didn't realise quite how good they were. Now that I've got into other extreme metal bands I'm finding I really like it. Amon Amarth certainly have a sound of their own, but it doesn't vary as much as it could. With Oden On Our Side has some great lead guitar work, but there are no stand out tracks like Guardians of Asgard on this years' Twilight of the Thunder God. I'll be buying more.
not the best by Amon Amarth but still up there. cry of the blackbirds is the stand out track on this album but as usual with Amon Amarth best played loud to get the best out of the album. not for the fient hearted. the lyrics and vocal still are outstanding. thumping bass lines and excellent riffs.
If you only buy one european metal album this year make sure it is this! It is deep and soulful metal at its best. The beautiful guitar riffs float above the growling vocals which really pull you into the music. Admittedly the dark, rustic tones of the vocals may put some people off at first, as it can be considered by some to be an acquired taste, but by the time you've listened to this album once through you'll be hooked! The lyrics are perhaps one of the best points to this album and unlike a lot of these types of vocals you never struggle to understand them. Each track tells an exciting viking tale of war but it doesn't get boring with each track bettering the next. I highly recommend this album as essential for any true metal fan but also for people who are just starting out.
