As an ex cricket-club groundsman, I don't 'do' pieces of grass in my garden, I have a lawn. That means fertilising it at least 4 times a year, top-dressing it twice, and cutting it at least twice a week at the height of the growing season (April and May). And that's after a great deal of trouble being taken to level the lawn! Once the weeds have been killed, all that's needed is an occasional squirt on individual weeds from a domestic spray-bottle with dilute lawn weed-killer. To obtain the much-admired stripes, three things are needed: a) A mower with weight and a rear roller b) a closely-mown lawn c) always cutting the lawn in the same direction with each cut Though some rotary mowers have rear rollers, few have much weight, and all fail to give the precise cut that cylinder mowers provide. So, what of this Atco Windsor 14? Well, it has no faults whatever, and produces a fantastic finish and I'd recommend it, without hesitation for those wanting the lawn your neighbours envy! Cylinder mowers cut well when they make many cuts per metre/yard that the mower moves forward. Electric mowers are better than petrol ones here, since the electric motors rev very quickly and so can turn the cylinder quickly, whilst gearing can then make the rear roller rotate slowly enough to walk behind: electric motors generate maximum torque at zero revs, so this makes them ideal. This mower has a particularly high number of cuts per m/yd - well over the 80 or so that might be regarded as typical for a petrol mower: the result is an immaculate cut. The height of cut is easily adjusted (the gaps between options are, perhaps, a little large) and the built-in rake lifts up the grass immediately before the cylinder cuts it, so, once again, thought and care has been given to ensuring that the resulting cut was as good as possible. The mower has sufficient weight, too, though not as much as that of battery-operated mowers, which can weigh nearly 2cwt. In consequence, the stripes it produces are clearly-defined and long-lasting (say, 3-5 days). The electric motor is all but silent, whilst the easily-adjusted cylinder is quiet too, so the mower can be used early in the morning when the dew's still on the grass - always the best time to cut a lawn, for the blades of grass are turgid and so are cut more cleanly. The grass-box has a string-lifted flap which can be raised to compress the collected cuttings and so allow a further 30% or so of cuttings to be collected - a nice touch. The speed of movement of the mower can also be adjusted, though, in truth, the top speed is the one that virtually everyone will use all the time. The handle, switches and cable-tidy (it holds the standard 25m of cable with ease) all work well enough and are sufficiently robust to provide a life-times use - 20-30 years use is perfectly possible, as my (other) mower, a 40yo battery-powered Webb has proved. This mower is all but identical to the (cheaper) Qualcast design, which is 'built to a budget'. Just as a Jag X class and a Ford Mondeo are essentially the same car, but one could never mistake which one you were being driven in, so this is clearly the 'Jaguar' version, and oozes quality in every area. If you have a lawn up to the size of a tennis-court or so, and want it to look right, this is an ideal mower for you. On eBay, nearly new, mine cost just £30 (new, £340) - a bargain!Read full review
Best mower I have ever used, performance and quality are top class, very easy to use. The only slightly negative is the weight but you need that for the excellent stripes !!

Excellent mower. Easy to use and provides an even close cut. Grass box is easy to load and unload and has good capacity
Wanted a lawn mower that did stripes, which this does, but because of this it is quite heavy due to the weight of the roller. Controls easy to use, extra long cord which is handy for big gardens. Large grass box with several different height cutting.
great little mower ideal for small to meium lawns, good cut nice finish, lighter to handle than the petrol version
