For someone used to a DSL’s camera I have found this to be an ideal little camera to have round my neck when out walking, it takes good quality shots and has a bag full of bulky lenses all in one light easy to use package.

I wanted a digital camera but a bit more than the usual wee hand/ pocket size one. but nothing that you need an ology before you can use it. This camera gives you the feeling that you are getting more profesional. The picture quality is superb and the options for taking different types of pictures is smashing. I still have to learn a lot about it. The only down side to the one I purchased is that it didn't come with amannual so it's a bit hit and miss. I do intend to get the hang of it and practice will make perfect. :)
Having owned a plethora of cameras in recent times,I feel I'm in a useful position to comment about the S3is's merits. A camera that is both at home with a novice or the more advanced user with features to satisfy the most or least creative amongst us. For me the big plus was the superb image stabilised canon lens- both very fast focusing and super sharp, not least covering a whopping 36-432mm zoom range. The image stabiliser was so effective, even at full zoom, getting a shot out of focus would be nigh on impossible! Also the lens's wide aperture at full zoom of f3.5 should help in low light conditions, dropping to a fast f2.7 at 36mm. The tilting adjustable screen is also a boon,if stealth is your thing, enabling shots to be taken at a variety of angles! Battery life is superb and the use of AA's keeps costs to a minimum with the use of rechargables. Flash performance was also impressive, whether using macro modes, indoor portraits or just fill in flash outdoors. Another great feature on this camera was the superb continuous shooting mode- one of only a very few cameras that actually allow you to track your moving subject through the viewfinder BETWEEN each frame- much like an SLR camera. Although taking movies via a camera is not my thing,I couldn't help but be impressed by the image quality in movie mode- no doubt aided by the superb lens. Did I forget to mention the movie mode also records in stereo audio!! The only fly in the ointment was the drop in image quality once you increase the iso setting- however, due to the light gathering abilities of the lens, this is unlikely to be an issue. All in all the Canon S3 is a well made camera with great features and supreme versatility. There really isn't much you cannot do with this camera and for any potential owner,I promise you- you won't be disappointed!Read full review
