In 2002's CITY OF GOD, director Fernando Meirelles combined visual flashiness with dark history in telling the story of three decades of unrest in underground Rio de Janiero. As youth gangs take over the slums in the 1960's we follow misfit teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues); who, throughout the subsequent decades, chooses to shoot all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera.
Fresh from the unexpected global success of CITY OF GOD, Meirelles contributed to the film's spin-off TV series CITY OF MEN. Shot with the same focus on the violent slums of Rio de Janiero, the series was less a sequel, more a continuation of the original themes with a slightly lighter tone. The 2007 film adaptation, included here, is a return to the dark roots of CITY OF GOD. Following the show's two central characters, best friends Ace (Douglas Silva) and Wallace (Darlan Cunha), the film is a pacy, bloody thriller that pays warm tribute to a diverse cross-section of American directors including Quentin Tarantino and Michael Bay, whilst retaining the elements that made Meirelles' 2002 original such a classic.
