  Very neutral honest amp, but that neutrality may not suit everyone

  I've been... living with Cyrus 1s (and 2s) on and off for 30 years with various other amps in-between, and all I've ever found them to be is completely flat and 'honest' across the audio spectrum with a massive current swing that can whip difficult speakers into submission, despite the amps' comparatively low power. Until a few years ago when I went active, I used a late-issue Cyrus 1 in my home studio because the neutrality helped me to create better mixes. But that neutrality is a shock to many, and it doesn't suit either gutless speakers with no bass nor some of the cheaper harsher digital sources. But partner the amp with care and you'll love it.

  Superb amps but will need a full service

  In another league to the likes of t...he Pioneer A400 and Marantz pm40se. While those amps are good considering what they sell for s/h , the cyrus 1 and 2 are just good , full stop. Word of warning though, the high quality selector switches will be sulphided now and need dismantling and chemically cleaning (a spray of switch cleaner won't help one jot) and some of the electrolytics will also have seen better days. Cyrus 2 adds a bigger transformer, more wallop and a proper mc phono stage but essentially the 1 and 2 are the same circuit. Later models have tougher circuit tracks but are actually harder to fix as cyrus removed the bias adjustment. budget £90-100 for a cyrus 1 and £120 for a full service and you'll have a stunning amp for under £220. Bargain.

  Crisp and lively sound, plenty of energy..., partner carefully with source and speakers to get the most from it. Expect to have bad capacitors and issues with input selector and volume control on un-serviced examples
