Fantastic Period Drama - great to re-watch after many years
Movie used to be called "The Honest Courtesan" I looked for it recently after having watched it over 15yrs ago. Set in Venice, it Follows the journey of a young woman in love with someone above her station,Her mother trains her to become a Courtesan to provide for her family and have have the man she loves as a Lover. Courtesans of the time were deemed as the most educated woman and close to all the most powerful men in Venice.

I think Catherine Mcormack needs a few more lead roles like these before we really get to see what she can do. There are a few moments which seem a little too unbelievable and yet the final scenes in the courtroom particularly are quite moving if you can get your head around the womens lib implications in the face of an overbearing inquisition. Overall quite a fun film which is both historical entertaining and set in Venice (host to arguably some of the worlds best ever movies). While delivered with humour and class i found the writing somehow glanced over seriously agressive issues such as abortion abortificants and the sickness which would have been caused by perpetual mandrake use and the issues of venereal diseases which, like the plague portrayed would have been extremely deadly. Altogether a bit too cheesy if quite a lot of fun. Veronica Franco the poetess courtesan portrayed was obviously really quite a character and the stunning looks and intelligent charm of McCormack allow for a convincing portrayal amidst the adversarial chatter and intrigues of political marriages. Rufus Sewell plays a capable support and his pal of "Infiltrator" fame whose name escapes me was suitably venomous as Franco's poetic adversary and detractor. Bisset is undeniably gorgeous in the role of mother who leads her daughter to the brink of death in this knife edge assault upon the church establishment of the day. Rather too dangerous brinksmanship for most mums i should fathom. Read full review

costume english drama treat!
I've been after this movie for year's.Of the version I was looking for was the Honest Courtesan! Set in Venice in the sixteenth century, it tells the ture story of Veronica Franco. It's beautifully shot and well played. Jacqueline Bisset plays the mother well!A bit of a bitch, who teachers her daughter her former trade! Full of good english actors that your don't know their names but have been seen in many things. Some parts are a little over the top and a little to mills and boons' romantic but I liked it!
