Eternal Sunshine is one of the most original films I've seen. It is essentially a love story, but this one is told from a completey different perspective - i.e. back to front. How refreshing to watch a film that examines how relationships fall apart, not just how people fall in love and live happily ever after, and one that does it with wit, pathos and insight. I'm not a fan of Jim Carey's comedies, but both Carey and Kate Winslett deliver stellar performances here and the supporting cast are also excellent. You do have to pay attention to keep up with what's going on, but what's wrong with that? If you liked Being John Malkovitch or Donny Darko, you should enjoy this.
I first watched this Oscar-winning film when it hit the rental stores, for several good reasons, mainly that the storyline appealed to me because of what I was going through in my own life at the time. The storyline: "Joel (Jim Carrey) is stunned to discover that his girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet), has had their tumultuous relationship erased from her mind. Out of desperation, he contacts the inventor of the process, Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson), to get the same treatment. But as his memories of Clementine begin to fade, Joel suddenly realizes how much he still loves her." We have a film from two 'visionary' people, writer Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich), and director Michel Gondry (Human Nature, also written by Kaufman), that you know will make you think. With most of the film set in Joel's mind, the opportunity to take advantage of some brilliant scenes is taken by Gondry to full effect. What is even more astonishing is how he put it all together in such a simple form. The way scenes disappear as Joel's inability to remember his relationship makes it more evident that simple can also be great. The film begins with Joel waking on Valentine's Day 2004 in a bad mood because of the state of his recently damaged car. From there he impulsively skips work and catches a train to Montauk and a freezing beach, where he meets Clementine. Things happen that make you question "what?" but as the movie progresses it all falls neatly into place. What is so perfect about the film is how Joel deals with the fact that his love has totally abandoned him and all their past. As any rational human being would, perhaps the only option left open to him is to have the same process performed. But as the night progresses, Joel decides to keep what he has and tries to fight the erasure, wanting to keep both Clementine in reality and the memories of her in his mind. Unfortunately Joel is helpless except within his own head, and someone else has moved in on Clementine in real life. Will Joel win? Will he and Clementine live happily, or unhappily ever after? Will ignorance become bliss? You will have to watch the movie! The film also stars Kirsten Dunst, (who has a pivotal role in a neat twist) Mark Ruffalo, and Elijah Wood as quite a slimy character taking advantage of Joel and especially Clementine in their situation. This film really does make you think - just the way I like my movies! It has sparked endless debates on movie forums, most of all about what happens to Joel and Clementine after the end of the film - which I promise not to spoil for those of you that haven't seen it. It's great to see Carrey in a straight role, and arguably his best performance - as a normal guy going through all the emotional range at various points in the film. Winslet's acting shows us she can't be typecast (she was nominated for an Oscar for this performance as well as looking hot with any hair colour!) All in all this is a must-see movie. It well deserves it's Oscar and Bafta awards. See this film if: You're deep thinking/You like weird films (like Momento, Brazil, Twelve Monkeys)/You enjoy sad films/You like to think "what if..." Do NOT see this film if: You only like brain-dead movies (like Charlie's Angels, Kill Bill)/You have an attention span of a goldfish/You can't stand the possibility of having to watch the film again to 'get it.'/You're trying to get over a relationship and feel depressed!Read full review
