We bought this as we have worn out copies on video and watch this series over and over but we never had the final episode so it was good to have a good quality and the complete set with the extra interviews. Love it and was very happy with the purchase
Excellent addition to my collection. Great to watch over and over again. This DVD is great entertainment. If you get a chance to buy one I would highly recommend it.
Ever Decreasing Circles
We were once lucky enough to be in the audience for a Richard Briers TV performance (in "The Good Life", the Quuens's supposed favourite ever show). Before it began Richard talked to the audience as himself-a character remarkably like Tom Good. Martin, the lead character Richard plays in "Ever Decreasing Circles" is definitely not a Tom Good easy-going man who takes life as it comes. Far from it. Martin is an obsessive planner who needs to be in charge of every aspct of the Close where they live, and his ever-patient wife ( played brilliantly by Penelope Wilton). In an extra to the first series Richard says that the director chose him because "he said I was the only man alive who could make Martin likeable", which is the key to the brilliance of this sitcom. Nowadays any off-the-shelf sitcom lead actor would have had Martin so detestable EDC would have bombed by episode 2. As it was the show ran to several series, and still commends very decent prices as an e-bay collectable today. EDC may be dated in some ways. The scenario whereby Martin's wife fancies the pants off the next door neighbour but does not give in to temptation would just not be put forward by a writer today. The characters would have indulged themselves by the third episode, or sooner. Who is to say EDC is any the weaker for its old-fashioned values however. I find it hugely enjoyable. If you enjoy good sitcom, this is a must have..Read full review
