Great DVD covering a great train trip with some of my favourite musicians.

As a document of the times this works really well - nicely inter-cutting present-day footage of the then promoter of the gigs with footage of him in the 1970's on a coast-to-coast gig-tour of Canada. Basically it's the story of him arranging the gigs and hiring a train to transport the artists between the shows. So, you've got really intimate footage of many great artists in an advanced state of intoxication jamming on a non-stop-party-train through drug-addled tunnels... In many places the train footage easily trounces what's available at the official gigs and whilst the sound in places isn't that great it's a perfectly acceptable price to pay for seeing 'behind the scenes'. Massively enjoyable and a complete education on what it's possible to do to yourself and still remain (almost) functional. 70's snapshot extraordinaire.Read full review
Fantastic film of the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin, a festival train rolling across Canada, amazing jams in railway carriages, fascinating comment on the counterculture of the time. Anyone who loves the film Woodstock should add Festival Express (masterful production, amazing history, great tunes,) to their collection.
Not much to complain about here. Fantastic footage of the Dead, Joplin, The Band etc. etc. on stage and on the train. Worth it for the music and for the wonderful atmosphere of the times that it conveys. Some good railway action for the closet train-spotters amongst us also!
Some good music of the time, footage of Janis Joplin very good. I brought it to see the Band, Grateful Dead and Janis live.Filmed well, sound good, not a great deal of music but worth the price IMO.
