There are a number of similar looking articles, which I assumed to be the same quality and construction. I paid about £15 for mine, and it's OK for the money, but nothing like as solid as it looks in the pictures. I'm giving it 4 stars rather than 3 because, let's face it, even a basic chess set is going to cost a minimum of £10 and this at least LOOKS better than a basic board. The pieces, however, have no heft to them. They could easily have been fashioned from balsa wood, and each pieces weighs about the size of a decent marshmallow. I was less interested in the pieces as much as I was in a nicer-looking board than the one I use my brass and chrome chess pieces on. Again, I emphasise that the APPEARANCE of the board is pleasant enough (not dark-brown and white, as depicted, I should point out, but rather dark-brown and cream), but the SUBSTANCE of the board also lacks heft. It looks as if it should be solid, like walnut, but my guess is that it is no more than 3mm of veneer-thin light-weight wood. So, in summary, a nice-looking board for the money, better than a basic board, perhaps, but no gravitas here. A nice gift for a child perhaps, not for an enthusiast!Read full review
