Have written up a review, but for some reason wouldn't let me submit, will try again once I figure out which words are interpreted as 'Inappropriate' by the word filter, not that there are any! Doesn't like repeated full stops! Summary; Entertainment. Kept him off his I-Pad, Phone for literally a full +8 hr's. Education. Good, there is life beyond everything digital entertainment. Quality. Reasonable, Crankshaft has a '+' cross section as opposed to 'o' cylindrical cross section, this likely contributes to the erratic rotation. Overall, would have given 5 stars if it wasn't for the the glitches detailed below. Don't be put off if you're son/daughter is of an inquisitive nature and keen to learn. Details; Bought this for my 14yr. old son as he is showing an interest in cars. He worked on the assembly of it all day after I explained to him to ensure any ragged edges, high protrusions are removed and make sure everything runs/rotates smoothly before attaching the electric motor. He returned later to show me the assembled unit, but also pointing out that some of the valves seemed to be sticking & the timing belt wanting to ride up off the pulley. This resulted in a disassembly, upon closer inspection there were still parts exhibiting extrusions from the manufacturing process and small nubbins that are as a result of removal from the plastic frame they were attached to. For those accustomed to 'plastic model' construction this was the norm, bit of a forgotten era with the advent of just about every form of entertainment being 'Digital' :-| So borrowing one of mums nail boards we dressed the edges & made sure everything was smooth, and of the same size as each other. As I recall we had to file down one or two parts so they ran smoothly within their respective locations. This was a good lesson for him to check all the parts as the same thing can happen with in the 'real' world, so to speak, then imagine having to disassemble a full size engine wouldn't be as easy as the model. So having gone through the rebuild with all parts de-burred he set it off running with the motor, ran very slow and erratic motion. He searched the model and found a site where someone had similar issues, he rectified by applying some silicone oil to the components, this appeared to improve his model. So off he duly went, partial disassemble, apply some silicone oil, reassembled. This does appear to have improved the running of it. However, the timing belt still wants to jump a couple of cogs as there is no form of tensioning the belt, eg. taking the slop out of the slack side of the belt, or could potentially be a couple of teeth shorter, or even constructed from a slightly more compliant material. We're looking into possibly attaching a small trailing lever to the idler on the slack side of the belt to see it that improves things.Read full review

A comprehensive kit with clear instructions, but the moving parts are difficult to turn smoothly, the crank and cams turn, but with some resistance. With the whole thing put together and running, the timing belt stretches as the cams stiffen and the toothed belt jumps over the teeth on the gears, despite a liberal coating of WD40 on all the moving parts. Another significant annoyance was the ignition wiring; for some reason the wires between the two distributors went between the two wires of one of the LED's and also between the two wires from the jack plug. Spent a good 30 minutes trying to untangle the mess, but gave up in the end. I was hoping to show my 9 year old son how the engine works, but not with this. Very disappointed with the whole thing; it could have been an excellent model.Read full review

Very clear building instructions and the parts are all well made. When assembled shows in great detail how an engine works, ideal for someone who does not know. Some of the parts are quite small and would not be suitable young children or someone with poor eyesight. Overall 10 out of 10

If you want a "small" challenge, get this, It's fun to put together, At least 4 hours, and looks impressive when completed. The engine sound it makes is pretty lame but then You bought it for the kit so it doesn't matter, I will probably cut the wire from the speaker as I am sure the ticking of the actual engine will sound better. I am not too happy about the smoothness of it's running but will probably take it apart again and see where it is catching and see what I can do about it, That's part of the fun tinkering and you don't get all oily.

Comes as many parts which is fun to put together. Very specific instruction plus you get some info how does an engine like that work - amazing!! The model I bought was a little bit faulty because I couldn’t set ignition timing. The distributors need switching sides and spark plugs had to be connected in a different way to work like they should. I gave 4 stars because I don’t think diagnosing glitch in the ignition system was planned part of this assembly.
