I recently wrote an unflattering review of a much more expensive copy of this novel. I tried a few times, but some gremlin always got in the way of it being accepted. I'll see if the cheaper price here makes any difference. In case it doesn't I won't bother repeating all I wrote before. Briefly, in this Thomas Pitt novel about a couple of people being murdered in separate fires, the story is fine while the likeable Pitt is centre stage, but deteriorates rapidly when his wife Charlotte gets involved. Inevitably, the bereaved doctor in the story falls a victim to her charms, but is eventually lectured by her for not giving the killer sufficient consideration! I didn't think any Perry character could come close to the lovely, the marvellous, the indomitable, the stop-em-at-fifty paces etc etc "Aunt Vespasia" for mind-numbing boredom, but good ole Char has done it at last. Bossy and self-righteous, she bores her way through the story in more ways than one. Still.at least Aunt V. doesn't get the chance to be quite as obnoxious as usual.Read full review
