For those of you who are familiar with t...his classic Tull album from 1975 I won't spend too long eulogising about it. This was the first Jethro Tull album that I bought back in 1979. I bought it because I liked the sleeve and saw that it came out in the mid-70s when bands like JT were at their peak. As it turned out it was a good choice. 'Minstrel in the gallery' is a good starting point if you're new to the band and want to try one of their albums. It contains a nice mixture of rocking bombast (title track), a longer, more ambitious track (Baker Street Mews) and acoustic folk (One white duck). It is a nicely balanced album with lots of strong melodies and some acerbic, typically Ian Anderson, lyrics. The 2015 Steven wilson remix is an improvement on the rather thin, toppy remaster from the early noughties. It benefits from a sweeter treble, a little more bass and a more spacious mid-range with better definition and articulation of the different instruments and vocals. When listening to Martin Barre's crunching guitar chords in the title track it is so genuinely thrilling I have to remember to breathe! It is not quite as bassy and trebly as the more recent SW remixes of 'Songs from the wood' and' Heavy horses', but I think it gets the balance spot on. Recommended
