Julius, a surprise from Du Maurier
I have read most of her books, my favorite being the King's General. Several of her books are set in Cornwall where she loved to live. She researches her subject and history carefully before adding her story woven in. On this occasion she writes of a half Jewish boy growing up at the time of the Prussian War in Paris. Many privations ensue followed by a trip to North Africa. Her descriptions of place and people have you right there. Its also is gritty with surprisingly violent happenings.... Daphne had a comfortable life in a well off and famous background . How she came to write of the this child growing to manhood in these Jewish and Kasbah style surroundings is amazing. I am enjoying the adventure and as yet have no idea how it will end. I recommend this book, and all of her others.
