I had always wanted a nice tu...rntable/amplifier setup when I was a teen in the 80's, but I had to make do with a Danset, then CD's and digital music came along. So this then is a middle aged indulgence designed to scratch an itch and amazingly I love it! It seems different to my Sonos system, it's more pungent? and my daughter loves it.

This is a Powerfull, warm sounded 2 way, 4 speakers ampl...ifier. Tone control is basic but good and distortion is not noticeable until the very end of the amplifier range. Very good and excellent value for money.

Grap...hic equalisers- everybody loves them, with their several sliders. Some of them even have spectrum analysers, where you can see your frequencies peaking, the dancing lights providing additional entertainment to the music. BUT, I will never forget someone in the HiFi business saying "People only use graphic equalisers because they're not happy with how the amplifier alone sounds". I have always used graphic equalisers....until now. The Marantz PM4400 has some pretty good reviews behind it written by the experts. Now it's time for a consumer's view. I opened the box that this amp came in, found the item mummified on bubble wrap. Then I revealed something that looked classy, very understated. I EVENTUALLY (being to my being disabled) replaced my old receiver with the 4400. I put on the piece of music I've always used in the past to gauge sound quality: Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve. I use this because it has a string arrangement at the start and then a rock band kick in. What I heard made my jaw drop. The strings were crisp and you could pick out the individual instruments, beautifully voiced. I like a lot of treble, so I cranked that up full and bass at around 60%. Not much volume was needed to fill my lounge with the best sound I have EVER heard coming out of my Eltax Liberty 3+ speakers. AND NO GRAPHIC EQUALISER!!! Guitars are truly voiced, the bass is full, but crisp and not muddy. On vocals, the 4400 excelled. Then I tried my usual listening format: vinyl. My turntable is a late '70's Sony PS-22 and a Nagaoka MP-11 cartridge. With my old amp, vinyl always sounded very mid range with not enough top and a not very crisp bass. The phono stage in the 4400 is superbly voiced. Played Sultans Of Swing, and Knopfler's guitar SUNG!! Last night I tried my headphones. Dark Side Of The Moon on vinyl. The detailing this amp has is truly brilliant, hearing little things I'd never heard before, and everything sounded so sweet!! The loudness button creates punchy kick-ass bass at lower volumes (but really you don't need it, this amp is THAT good!!) The amplifier I received is in near excellent condition visually, with only the odd small mark, but doesn't distract from it's good looks. In conclusion, I'd heard of Marantz for over 30 years, and I know they have had a reputation for quality and sonic excellence. But I did NOT expect what I got. For the £79.99 I paid for this wonderful piece of kit, I almost feel guilty it wasn't more expensive, even if the remote is missing, which is the least of my worries!! By the way, my graphic equaliser is now on sale on EBay!!!!!
