The self-explanatory Love Their Country is a return to form for Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, as their last offering Ruin Johnny’s Bar Mitzvah was a tad weak with the exception of one or two star tracks. The CD in a nutshell, punk rock’s favourite covers band rip their favourite country songs, old or new and give them the Gimme treatment. Instant likes on the first play were tracks that I knew already, old classics such as Ghost Riders In The Sky, Desperado by The Eagles, Denver’s Annie’s Song – the third track of his they’ve covered and I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, making excellent use of the bagpipes. After a few spins, a few of the tracks I didn’t know previously jumped out, opening track Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) by Garth Brooks, Goodbye Earl by the Dixie Chicks and Sunday Morning Coming Down written by Kris Kristofferson. One criticism though, was never that keen on Jolene as a song, possibly the weakest link on the album and feel as though they could’ve chosen a better Dolly Parton track, there are plenty of others to choose from. An excellent album albeit very short at just over 25 minutes long, which is well worth the purchase.Read full review
