It is a bridge camera but modern technology now makes this a great product. It is much lighter than a DSLR to carry and does not have the necessity of changing lenses. To photograph a butterfly, or small insect, you can use the close up:which just takes a second to set or if you see a bird at a distance the 24 to 3000 equivalent DSLR lens can provide a sharp close up shot: Far better than my DSLR with a 500 lens (which weighs more than the P1000). Also if you want to take photos of the moon, there is a moon setting for some great detailed shots. The drawback is the battery life is short, mainly becaise the focus is powered and the battery is used for wifi downloading (approx 250 shots). Also because of the electronic focus it takes a lot of practice to capture birds when flying. However, you have all of the setting found on a DSLR for aperture, ISO and shutter speed if you want to move off Auto. Overall, a great value camera, especially if you do not want to carry a heavy DSLR and like the flexibility of one lens

An amazing zoom capability. As expected it'...s best used with at least a monopod for stability at high magnification. Although a substantial sized camera, it's still a lot more compact for occasional snapping, than a DSLR with a 600mm lens. In most modes shutter speed is a bit slow for active wildlife. There is also an awkward amount of lag between shutter button and shot. A very handy addition to your options, but not a complete alternative to a DSLR.

I have worked my way up through the nikon range, when I had the p90...0 I was amazed then came along the p1000.this cameras zoom is second to none, you definitely need to use a tripod as the camera is hard to hold steady .the clarity of photos is outstanding, using the macro is excellent as well . I would rate this camera 10/10.

Really too early to tell as yet - I need much more time to get us...ed to this new camera. Seems good although not sure about the image quality as yet - though that is probably down to the settings I've used.
