For ages now I have been photography birds at the local wildlife trust reserve using my 300mm AF lens - yet feeling desperate for more reach. So, you know how it goes, want to buy a 400mm or longer lens, can't afford that so look at TCs. Initially I tried 'off-brand' converters (1.4x & 2.0x) as none of the Nikon ones gave autofocus. Then I got an AF-S lens and decided to swap the converters too on the basis that Nikon on Nikon was a better bet. I was not wrong! Initially I had the 1.4x, then a 1.7x - then Nikon released this, the third version of their 2.0x AF-S converter. A stunning piece of kit, much better than the TC-20e II so if you do buy, make sure you get the TC-20E III. This TC with my Nikon 300mm f/4.0 AF-S lens gives great results, even if what you might consider sub-optimal lighting conditions. The combo is an effective 600mm f/8 lens; Nikon suggest that for best autofocus performance you need f/5.6 or greater. To be honest, I haven't noticed any loss of AF performance. Image quality is great, even with the lens set at f/4 (net f/8) but it improves a tad with the lens at f/5.6 (a net f/11). Working at those apertures you obviously need to balance ISO setting and shutter speed though the latest Nikon D-SLRs have great high ISO capability. Dis-likes? The only one is the price. But I took the view of value rather than price; it is good value. If you want a 2.0x TC for your Nikon lens, get this one. You won't be disappointed.Read full review

I haven't tried the previous TC20E I and II but they had a reputation for not being as sharp as the TC17 and TC14. I don't have a problem with this TC20 III. It seems to do a very good job of doubling your reach without acquiring a massive and expensive telephoto unless you can justify that to yourself!
