Fairly useful and worth having if can get cheaply.
Generally an interesting book and good value at the price I paid. It gives a useful overview but is of course now rather out of date. There are also some factual errors, a risible one being that the London Underground uses Westbound, Eastbound etc instead of Up and Down because of American input regarding electrification! Captions on maps are also sometimes missing so for example not obvious why some coast to coast lines in blue others in black.

Cheap but disappointing and is not an authoritative reference book
This is a disappointing book because it mainly uses photographs that are not original but which can be found in many other books on American railway history. The photo reproduction is poor and old-fashioned (for a book published within the last 30 years) The text contained few original facts and was obviously written from a non-American viewpoint. This would be fine but I didn't feel there was sufficient thought put into it. It attracted my attention because it was cheap - I now know why!
