This is a very well-written book detailing the lives of half a dozen people in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and their families as the famine of the late 90s begins to bite. Demick has concentrated on the inhabitants of one major North Korean town on the grounds that, if they all tell similar stories, chances are those stories are true. Some of the revelations may be shocking for those who are not familiar with the situation in the DPRK, but the subject is handled sensitively and the reader is given revealing insights into the innermost thoughts of the various characters. I say 'characters' - these are real people that Demick has interviewed over a number of years. Nothing to Envy is a very easy read and you'll find yourself staying up way past bedtime with this one.
It’s a well written, interesting insight into the lives of people in North Korea.

This book was recommended by my niece. It is utterly compelling. From the Kim dynasty and its Stalinist cruelty to the lives of 6 families and the defections which made lives unbearable this book is a real page-turner
