Covent Garden, The world in a market.
Old Covent Garden, an excellent book, as someone who took vegetables into the market and reloaded with fruit to take out I am very familiar with the goings on as expressed in the book. I first went to the market on a vegetable lorry from Lincolnshire as a small boy about 1950. I was filled with awe and thrilled to bits by the place. I finished going there in 1972 when I switched from driving to office work. When I had grown up I was delivering veg and reloading fruit etc. to take out of the market and so can relate to the book in a fulfilling and understanding way. The only small niggle I have is that it doesn't show any of the lorries that served the market from all corners of the country with their various cargo's of fruit and veg. They were as important as the traders and porters and should have had a small mention. Incidentally, there was nothing to beat a rum & coffe in The Enterprise on Long Acre at 4.30 on a cold and frosty morning. Kind regards Brian SharpeRead full review
