I already had a DMR EX 77 recorder and was very pleased with its build standard, and general performance so when my wife's friend told me she would have to replace her ageing analogue recorder when the impending switch off occurs in this region on 6th July 2011, I had no hesitation in recommending a Panasonic recorder as a replacement and agreed to look for one for her on e bay. The 87 is virtually identical to the 77 but has the advantage of a larger hard drive (250 GB rather than 160GB). I like the way it performs but as with the majority consumer electronics equipment, the user manual is not easy to understand but being a retired electonics engineer, I paid little attention to it, preferring to find my own way round its many functions. My biggest dislike is the time it takes to "boot up" at switch on but I believe this has been improved in later models. (It is about 4 years since it first came to the market) I have tried a few other recorders and consider Panasonic's machines to be easier to use. The empirical nature of its controls allows people like myself to work out how to make it do what I want it to without reference to any instuctions. (Rather like NOKIA mobile 'phones - another self explanatory piece of kit)Read full review
