Theophrastus once defined fecklessness as the man who in winter castigates his slaves for not buying cucumbers. Or to put it another way, OMG like you know Paris has like made an album. Time was Paris Hilton was an overpriced hotel in France but now we all know that it is in fact a latter-day Ann-Margret who has launched blitzkrieg on the world of low culture. We all know why we’ve heard of Paris Hilton and in case you had forgotten sex quickly becomes a running theme of this album. Simulated noises of ecstasy may at times add to music but Paris is no Jane Birkin when it comes to making them. Come to that, she isn't even Jane Grey. When not trying to sound like she’s being banged she often falls back on the whispering Marilyn Monroe effect but ends up sounding more like podgy New Romantic no-mark Marilyn. Lyrics revolve around how sexy she believes herself to be and the various attempts to find new ways to say the same thing soon grate and indeed lead one to groan in despair at the condition of fin de siècle young womanhood. A cover of Rod Stewart’s low point "Da Ya Think I’m Sexy" had me in stitches it was so ill-advised. Overall Paris is just taking it all too seriously to the point where she probably thinks irony means something that is a bit like iron. A dose of self-deprecation would have helped, with sometime sparring partner Lindsay Lohan demonstrating how taking the mickey out of oneself can boost the contents of a spoilt brat’s music. Two rappers roped in to appear on one song add nothing to the proceedings with Fat Joe in particular truly woeful and bordering on Jim Bowen rap territory. The whole thing seems like a bunch of out-takes from a Gwen Stefani recording session that said chanteuse rejected for not having the intellectual depth of "Hollaback Girl". And enough with the flaming synthesized handclaps, already! Still, it would be too easy to give this album a kicking as I have heard worse in my time. Hilton (assuming it is actually her singing and not some session singer) does have a reasonable voice when she cuts out all the breathiness and some of the songs are quite good. "Stars are Blind", the main single, is the best by some distance, a diverting piece of cod reggae which, whilst hardly reinventing the wheel, is very listenable. A Grease sample underpins "I Want You" which gives the song a kitschy flavour that is notably missing on the rest of the album, whilst if "Jealousy" is anything to go by then Paris should, assuming there is to be a follow-up, go down the guitar route as she makes a passable alternative to Ashlee Simpson on this song. That being said the song is an obvious attack on Nicole Richie and comes across as an ad for the next series of the Simple Life. Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" it aint! One wonders why Kathy Hilton, that sensible, pretty woman off the telly, doesn’t give Paris the shaking she deserves. Perhaps if she had Paris would have produced a stronger album in which she made fun of her reckless spending and loose morals, whilst ripping off Avril Lavigne with a guitar-led sound. As it is Paris ploughs her own furrow as usual and therefore gives us an album that sparkles on occasion but is overall not very good. Perhaps Paris Hilton is the archetype of Theophrastus' character of "petty ambition", trying to turn a sex tape into a whole career just as the character wastes his money on the blue jay that he keeps. Or to put it another way, I am like soooo over this album.Read full review
I know everyone will probably judge this album before theyve even heard it because lot's of people think of its paris etc, because everyone beliefs what they read in the tabloids, newpapers, internet etc. But the album is great, paris is a great voice and all the songs are great, they have good lyrics and make you want to listen again and again. The album is perfect for people who like dance/pop music and is a great buy!
only bought this to judge for myself after reading reviews which were more concerned with slating paris than giving unbiased account of songs standards. as expected production is excellent, and i'm glad to say there are 3/4 songs which are worthy of single success whoever the artist may be.these alone are worthy of the admission price.
