'Sledgehammer' was a massive hit (number one in the USA), as was 'Don't Give Up', with Kate Bush's vocals adding extra pathos. 'This Is The Picture' clearly shows the slightly surreal influence of co-writer Laurie Anderson, and the whole is given flight by Daniel Lanois' impeccable production. The towering achievement, however, is 'Mercy Street', a sparely orchestrated and perfectly constructed tribute to the late poet Anne Sexton. Review Peter Gabriel - So
This CD is one of those rare, timeless, influential albums delivered by an artist who was, and still is, not afraid to experiment and put out exactly what he wants musically. The production on this CD is excellent, crystal clear, and penetrating. I loved this album sonically when it was first releasrd in 1986 on vinyl, and have found that it has transfered well onto CD too. I had not played the album for a number of years when I bought the CD version. I was very happy to find that the album still sounded as fresh as it had the very first time I played the record back in 1986. Each track has an excellent quality about them, from the song writing to the amazing musicians performing on them, and Peter Gabriel's voice is in top form, filled with absolute naked emotion giving each song that extra breath of life, so missing from much of todays modern pop songs. This is a must have album for anyone's collection, This is the album that declared Peter Gabriel as a superstar, If you dont have a copy, I suggest you get one, you wont be disappointed..!!!!!Read full review
CD. "So" Peter Gaabriel
Fantastic CD all round. Has definitely stood the test of time. A cracker! Just amazed I have taken so long to discover it. Maybe it is because I am a SILVER SURFER!
A Nostalgic Purchase
I was bought a copy of this album for a birthday in 1986 and following my departure from vinyl, have not heard much of it since. However, watching an 80s movie recently with a couple of tracks on the soundtrack I was curious to buy it on CD and hear it all once again. I do think it has excellent production and with lyrics having a real relevance today whilst retaining a real 80s sound. It is often a mistake to go back but definitly not in this case.
