This Multi disc spinner is really special. The CD player is well above average and that’s it weakest link, in that it’s more forgiving than other CD players. It replaced my Very Good HK DVD2550s. I was expecting the Pioneer DV868AVIS DVD to beat it on just the sound. It did & picture and everything else apart from the magnificent HK remote. But what you all want to know about is its SACD player. Using 5.1 speaker set up is so much better than 2 channel SACD, because 2 channels are restricted to reproducing, just a stereo image. It does it very well but the 5.1 speaker set-ups clearly has superior separation from the 6 multi output leads. (I use component signatures for the sound & picture.) The artists are able to give me the impression I am on stage with them. The centre speaker projects a significantly stronger & realistic solo performance (when turn to max, on a digital amp and the rears are setup at a minus setting.) Not that I bought the Pioneer DV868AVIS DVD for home cinema, it plays most music better than I have heard on HD-master audio via an active HDMI lead! The picture via the components is that impressive you are able to extract even more detail than you need. The HDMI picture is said to be even better. I have found it necessary to up convert my Component picture though my Sony digital amp, which has a decent up converter. I have sometimes in the past been disappointed with the lack of DVD playback quality on certain discs. If this player can’t make all your discs sing & dance, then you need to get a different recording of it. I’m also just as delighted with the analogue playback of music DVD's such as Fleetwood Mac The Dance, wow it delivered so much more than in digital mode. Yeah the on screen menus are dated & the remote is bulky & the DVD disc layer pauses & it takes about 10 seconds longer to load a MP3 cd disc. And you have to keep switching between digital on & off 5.1 multi channels & 2 channels in the menu. But hey it’s just so rewarding to wait this little bit longer. For me it’s all about the sound then visual performance. I’m never sold on gimmicks, to compromise its primary purpose. I found that using a coaxial digital, was a must to use as a bench mark. Then 99/100 times switching it over to the 6 multi channel inputs, once you discovered the best sounding DVD disc choice. And no, it can’t play back a SACD via a single digital coaxial lead. I wouldn’t be interested in using it if it did. The analogue out puts are not just for show either. As for the first time it out performed my top tip of getting extra gain out of a scart adapter for stereo sound. Ohh & when in digital amps menu I found switching the phase noise on gave me a significant sonic gain. This player of mine was bought second hand originally for me to enjoy SACD only while I saved up, for a 2011 multi disc spinner with Blu-ray. Now I will not be looking to replace this player. I’m also content with its looks as I was initially tentative regarding it not being available in glossy black. Pioneer has really pulled out all the stops here and some, to deliver a player that finally exceeds all my true, expectations. And finally reveals bags of that missing mid rage of my digital amp. Please note that I have my whole system set up specifically for music playback, not Home Cinema. Although it also impresses with DVD movies as well. I hope you enjoy this player as much as my audiophile community does.Read full review
This dvd player won more awards than anyother dvd player available of this value, it is a stunning piece of kit when put into the correct system. Picture quality is fantastic and sound as good as it gets when linked with the HDMI cable, if it has one fault its that the player is not HD READY in other words it wont play HD DVDS but who cares for what i paid for this one. Buying this player was for along time something i intended to do boy am i glad i did.
The Pioneer DV868 AVI is a fantastic top of the range dvd player with stunning results when partnered with a good screen or projector. The pioneers real strong point is the HDMI output producing a fantastic picture with superb detail and good depth of feel to it, the only negative about the pioneer is the component output is not as good as it could be or some other machines of a similar price but if you wish to use the HDMI then this is the player for you. Having looked at alot of other players originaly costing around £1000 the pioneer comfortably comes out on top leaving you needing to spend alot more money to beat it.
Well, in two words: EXCEL-LENT. If you have an esoteric system, with cables costing hundreds of £££, speakers on the 4 or 5 digits figure and amplification idem, youl will not like the DV868 stereo-only skills. Why? It's too cheap... But still, you can use it as the primary AV source - the room will be in the dark, so the japanese brand will not be shown, just seen. And what you see, is an amazing picture and great sound. But assuming that you're living in this real world, and are not after the latest bluray, this DVD (and SACD, DVD-Audio, CD...) will fulfill your needs. Solidly built, great sound, fantastic picture, plenty of connection possibilities. BUT WHY IS IT SILVER?
you will be amazed best i have ever bought fantasticccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
