This is a movie fine in places without succeeding overall. David, t...he central character is 23 and starts dating 37 year-old Rafi, who is also his mother's therapy client. Uma Thurman as Rafi delivers a subtle and intense performance, but newcomer Bryan Greenberg as David is no match for her. He doesn't bring anything fresh to his role of a playful yet sensitive young man trying to make his way as an artist. Meryl Streep provides much of the comedy as an earnest Jewish therapist, as mixed-up as any of her clients might be, especially in the scene where she gradually realises that the young man with whom Rafi is having spectacular sex described to her in graphic detail is her very own son. The film's incidental delights - its loving evocation of New York, David's bickering opinionated family - don't quite compensate for the lack of flair at its centre. I wonder if it wouldn't have worked better as straight drama rather than a romcom because there's a sense of painful personal experience on director Ben Younger's part inspiring this coming-of-age story. And with say Jake Gyllenhaal playing David.
This light-hearted romantic comedy stars... Uma Thurman as 'Rafi' a 37 year-old single woman whom having just signed her divorce papers, figures out that 23 year-old 'David' Bryan Greenberg is her new ticket to happiness. 'Rafi' attends therapy, and a fued arises when her therapist, played by Meryl Streep .. (who ironicly is her therapy herself) .. discovers that the 23 year-old is non other than her son 'David' . The only low of the movie is that the chemistry between Uma Thurman and Bryan Greenberg simply isn't there, however on a plus, 'Prime' is an intelligent romantic comedy. It may not have you falling about laughing but it will give you a warm fuzzy feeling you'll be find difficult to shrug off.
This movie is primarily looking at the funny side of odd re...lationships. The movie brings out beautifully how a typical relationship between a older 30plus woman and a college kid-just-graduated can handle each others nuances. Added to the twist in this romantic comedy is the fact that the older woman is consulting with a physiciarist who happens to be related to her budding boyfriend ! and how, his mother. The ending is also beautifully handled and is believable for the way most of these type of stories in each of our lives turn out.
