This book is written for social work degree students and will also be of interest to professional practitioners. It provides the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure that social workers are well prepared to undertake essential work with children and explores how social workers' values and attitudes can affect the work they do and the safety of children.
Maureen was formerly the Director of Social Work programmes at the University of Leeds. She has substantial experience of working with children and families as a social worker, a Guardian ad Litem and in adoption. She maintains an interest in practice through chairing an adoption panel and involvement with the Independent Reviewing Mechanism, and also has an interest in the law in practice which she keeps up through involvement in a practitioners' legal group. Steve is Practice Co-ordinator for the Social Work programmes at the University of Leeds. He has a particular interest in practice teaching, has developed the practice curriculum for the new social work degree, and is also an assessor for the practice teaching and post-qualification awards. He is an experienced fostering and adoption worker who maintains an interest in practice and policy through involvement with a national agency.
