The Sony BDP-S500 might be one of the first Blu-Ray players on the market though its performance is superb. Like many people who buy these older players, I needed one with analogue outputs to use with an old TV. The player has component video, s-video, composite video and audio outputs in stereo and multi channel as well as an HDMI output. The picture and sound is perfect. Even s-video and composite video look surprisingly clear and refined. Sound is also very clear and transparent with a deep, neutral and dynamic quality that sounds good with both films and music cd's. The motorised front panel lowers down before opening the disc loading draw adding a nice touch to what is already a very classy and well made Blu-Ray player.

I already had one of these from new, so knew what it could do. With bluRay and a 4K telly It's nearly as Good as 4K. Has optical digital output as well as Dolby surround sound Will play CDs quite well just takes longer to load. Also of course bluRay audio. I use the optical for the front channels and the anologue for the rear using two amplifiers, when watching films

the first thing i must say about this machine is the very long load time for blu ray films, this is the first blu ray machine i have owned and i dont quite get why it should take so long to load, anyway once it has the picture quality is outstanding, good colour , amazing detail,i also have an hd dvd player (xbox 360 separate driver) which if i was honest, i would say is better than blu ray,but blu ray is the winning format ((plenty of older titles though on hd dvd) i bought this machine for the audio outputs as i have a pre hdmi cinema amp (denon avc a10se) and it really is amazing! i use mission 752's and i cannot fault it as a setup, the blu ray machine gives better sound than the hd dvd but probably because its a more expensive machine! also i use coaxial, which is often better, on the blu ray and optical on the hd dvd and this sounds a little bass lightRead full review
Initially this player wouldn't play newer Blu-Ray DVD's. The unit required a firmware update to enable it to play them. This was a relatively simple process and involved downloading an update from the Sony web site. After installing, the firmware updated to ver 4. Now plays all Blu-Ray DVD's and was well worth the money.
