I really wanted to like this book but it didn't live up to expectations. By far the most disappointing aspect is the quality of the printing of the photographs - most of them look as if they were taken in the Victorian era rather than the 1950s, such is the poor reproduction. I don't know whether this is due to trying to keep printing costs down, but it really detracts from the product. Far better examples of most of these pictures can be found on the internet (and at least one photo belongs to the 1970s, try to spot it!) In addition, the narrative is clumsy, there are frequent typographical errors ..."students of the Marine Collage"... "the band preforming in the park"... etc - factual inaccuracies ..."transistor radios not available during the war" (well no they wouldn't be as the transistor wasn't invented until 1947). I can't believe this book was ever proof-read. Sorry, I'm sure it's a well-meaning attempt but just doesn't grab the interest and will only be enjoyed by the most die-hard nostalgicsRead full review
