In 1961 The Beatles were learning their trade playing seedy clubs in Hamburg. A music producer Bert Kaempfert, needed a band to back singer Tony Sheridan, another Brit doing the rounds in Germany. The Beatles (Lennon,McCartney,Harrison and Pete Best) went along to the studios on 2 occasions and included on this collection are the 8 tracks on which they played. Highlights include the 2 best known recordings, "My Bonnie", which legend has it brought The Beatles to the attention, some time later, of Brian Epstein, and "Ain't She Sweet" the first professional recording of The Beatles on their own, and a very confident Lennon vocal. My Particular favourite is instrumental "Cry For A Shadow", a rare Lennon/Harrison composition. The good thing about this collection is that although some of the tracks were on "Beatles Anthology 1" this may be the only place you can get all 8 tracks together. The down side of it is the quality of the recording. Although it is certainly "listenable" it is not great, as you may expect from something that was done fairly cheaply at that time. There are also 6 other tracks on the CD which are just Tony Sheridan and do not include The Beatles. In short its a must have for anyone interested in The Beatles history.Read full review
